Seven layers of banana split deliciousness make up this super fun Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie, complete with homemade chocolate sauce. It's one super tasty summertime (or
anytime) ice cream treat!
Summertime and ice cream. Yep, they pretty much go hand-in-hand. But then
again, ice cream is the perfect treat for ANYtime, not just summer. And Frozen
7-Layer Banana Split Pie is a deliciously fabulous and fun way to enjoy it.
Packed with both vanilla and chocolate ice cream, chopped bananas, pineapple,
homemade chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and sprinkles (of course), this tasty
pie is just loaded with banana split deliciousness.
And that homemade chocolate sauce? -- Well, I think that may just be my favorite part. Made from a base of chocolate chips and evaporated milk, it's simply rich, creamy, and delicious.
Packed with layers of ice cream and classic banana split toppings, this frozen pie delight delivers up fabulous banana split flavor in every bite.
Now I've got to be straight-up honest with something about this pie. --
While it's not at all difficult to make, preparing it does span a pretty
good length of time. Given all its layers and the freezing time required
between assembling each one, 7-Layer Banana Split Pie is a bit tedious and
time consuming to make.
I have been known to spread the pie's assembly over two (or even three!)
days -- which actually then makes Frozen Banana Split Pie a really easy
dessert to prepare if you're short on time, because you can make it in
little 5 to 8 minute snippets.
So hey, in some instances, its time-span prep may be an advantage. Just
do be aware to plan ahead when making Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie, and
don't leave it's assembly to the day you plan to serve it.
Nothing about making this Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie is difficult, but it's preparation does span a good length of time given all its layers and the freezing time required between each one. Just plan ahead when making this dessert and don't leave its prep to the day you plan to serve it.
Just after cooking, the chocolate sauce will coat a spoon or spatula but
still run off it easily. The sauce will continue to thicken up as it
cools.

Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie Ingredients:
Frozen Banana Split Pie is made of layers of traditional banana split
ingredients. -- Complete with layers of homemade chocolate sauce. And
believe me, that's a whole lot of banana split deliciousness!
For the homemade chocolate sauce, you'll need:
- Chocolate chips - Semi-sweet chocolate chips serve as the base of the sauce, creating a deep rich chocolate flavor.
- Evaporated milk - The chocolate sauce's dairy component, producing a creamy-textured drizzle-able consistency.
- Powdered sugar - Also known as confectioners' sugar, this super-fine sugar serves as the chocolate sauce's sweetener. It creates a smoother sauce than standard granulated sugar, so we do not recommend substituting.
- Butter - Unsalted butter adds flavor and richness, and helps create a silky texture.
In addition to the homemade chocolate sauce, for the banana split
pie layers, you'll need:
- Graham cracker crust - A 9-inch prepared graham cracker crust serves as the "case" for the pie's filling.
- Vanilla + chocolate ice cream - A pint of vanilla and a 1/2-pint of chocolate create the ice cream layers of the banana split filling.
- Bananas - It's not a banana split without the banana! Slicing and then quartering the banana slices keeps the frozen pieces from being unwieldy and difficult to cut in the finished frozen pie.
- Crushed pineapple - An 8-ounce can of crushed pineapple is just the right amount for this recipe. If an 8-ounce can is difficult to find, 1/2 of a 20-ounce can works just fine.
- Chopped pecans - A nice nutty element for the banana split pie. However, they can be omitted if you'd like.
- Homemade whipped cream (whipping cream + powdered sugar + vanilla extract) - A thick layer of homemade whipped cream beautifully tops the pie. An 8-ounce container of Cool Whip non-dairy whipped topping can be substituted.
- Rainbow sprinkles - I suppose these could be optional, but sprinkles make everything fun! Colorful rainbow sprinkles decorate the top of the pie. Substitute a single color, chocolate sprinkles, or omit them altogether, if you prefer.
How to Make Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie:
Nothing about making this Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie is difficult, but it's preparation does span a good length of time given all its layers and the freezing time required between each one. I have been known to spread the assembly of this pie over two (or even three!) days -- which means it can be worked on in little 5 to 8 minute snippets. Just plan ahead when making this dessert and don't leave its prep to the day you plan to serve it.
The first step in making this yummy layered ice cream treat is to whip
up some homemade chocolate sauce that's used in building the pie's
layers. Making the chocolate sauce is amazingly easy. Simply melt some
butter and chocolate chips together in a saucepan with evaporated milk
and powdered sugar, simmering it for a bit until its slightly thickened.
Then set it aside to cool to room temperature before assembling the
banana split pie.
Oh, chocolate heaven! And, yes, I licked that spatula when I was done with it. -- Just in case you were wondering.
Oh, chocolate heaven! And, yes, I licked that spatula when I was done with it. -- Just in case you were wondering.
While the chocolate sauce cools (or even before you make the sauce),
start layering banana split yumminess into a prepared graham cracker
crust, beginning with some softened vanilla ice cream.
Cover the ice cream layer and freeze it until firm. Then add on a layer of homemade chocolate
sauce.
Again, freeze the new layer until firm.
Then continue building layers of chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice
cream, more chocolate sauce, crushed pineapple, chopped pecans, and
bananas -- freezing the pie between each one.
When it comes time to make the banana layer, slice the bananas and
then cut each slice into quarters, arranging the pieces evenly on
top of the layer below.
Cutting the banana slices into quarters is important. -- In the
finished pie, the bananas freeze very firmly. If you place whole
banana slices in the pie, it's really difficult to slice through and
get your fork through the big slices at serving time.
Finish off the banana split pie layers with a thick topping of
homemade whipped cream and a generous sprinkling of rainbow sprinkles.
Sprinkles make everything fun! -- Especially this fun and tasty pie.
Then pop the finished pie in the freezer to freeze
completely. At this point, I freeze the pie uncovered for about an hour until
the whipped cream begins to firm. Then, I wrap it loosely with
plastic wrap and return the pie to the freezer to finish its
freezing. Leaving it uncovered for the first bit sets the
whipped cream, preventing it from being messed up by the
covering.
At serving time, let the pie stand at room temperature for about
5 minutes to soften before slicing.
Now, we love our Frozen Banana Split Pie really soft -- like
almost on the verge of melting into a sloppy puddle. So, we also
have an alternate softening method for our slices. We cut and
plate our slices as soon as the pie is removed from the freezer,
and then place the slices in the refrigerator for about 15
minutes. This method creates the perfect texture for us. If you
find the pie texture not to your liking after the 5 minutes at
room temperature, we suggest giving our alternate refrigerator
method a try.
So whether it's this yummy Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie or
another scrumptious ice cream treat, be sure to enjoy some
summertime ice cream! I think we all deserve it, don't you?

Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie
Seven layers of banana split deliciousness make up this super
fun Frozen 7-Layer Banana Split Pie, complete with homemade chocolate sauce. It's one super tasty summertime (or anytime)
ice cream treat!
Prep time: 40 MinCook time: 15 MinInactive time: 8 HourTotal time: 8 H & 55 M
Ingredients
For the homemade chocolate sauce:
- 1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 (5 oz.) can evaporated milk
- 1 c. powdered sugar
- 1/4 c. butter
For the banana split pie:
- 1 pint vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt
- 1/2 pint chocolate ice cream or frozen yogurt
- 1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker pie crust
- 1 c. chopped pecans
- 1 (8 oz.) can crushed pineapple, drained (or 1/2 of a 20 oz. can)
- 2 bananas sliced, and then slices cut into quarters
- 1 c. heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 c. powdered sugar
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 T. rainbow sprinkles
Instructions
Prepare chocolate sauce:
- Combine chocolate chips, evaporated milk, 1 cup powdered sugar, and butter in a small saucepan. Over medium-low heat, melt the ingredients together, stirring frequently.
- Once melted, reduce heat to low and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened just a bit, about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Remove from heat and set aside to cool to room temperature. The chocolate sauce will continue to thicken some as it cools.
Layer 1:
- Scoop half of the pint of vanilla ice cream into a bowl and set aside for a few minutes to soften (but don't let it completely melt!).
- Spread softened vanilla ice cream evenly over the bottom of the graham cracker pie crust.
- Cover and freeze until firm.
Layer 2:
- Spread about 1/3 cup of the chocolate sauce over the vanilla ice cream; sprinkle with 1/2 cup of chopped pecans.
- Cover and freeze until set.
Layer 3:
- Scoop the chocolate ice cream (you'll only use 1/2 of the pint) into a bowl and set aside for a few minutes to soften.
- Spread softened chocolate ice cream evenly over the pie.
- Cover and freeze until firm.
Layer 4:
- Spoon about 1/3 cup of chocolate sauce over the chocolate ice cream; top with drained pineapple.
- Cover and freeze until set.
Layer 5:
- Soften remaining 1/2 pint of vanilla ice cream. Spread softened vanilla ice cream evenly over the pie.
- Cover and freeze until firm.
Layer 6:
- Spread remaining chocolate sauce over the vanilla ice cream layer.
- Top with remaining 1/2 cup chopped pecans and the chopped bananas.
- Place in freezer while you prepare whipped cream for the 7th layer - the pie doesn't need to freeze until firm before adding the 7th layer.
Layer 7:
- With an electric mixer, beat whipping cream and vanilla extract until foamy. Gradually add the 1/4 cup powdered sugar, beating until soft peaks form.
- Spread whipped cream over the pie, completely covering the banana pieces.
- Sprinkle with rainbow sprinkles.
- Freeze. (Note - At this point, I freeze the pie uncovered for about an hour until the whipped cream begins to become firm. Then, I wrap it loosely with plastic wrap and return the pie to the freezer to freeze completely.)
To serve:
- At serving time, let the pie stand at room temperature for about 5 minutes to soften before slicing and serving.
- Garnish each slice with a maraschino cherry, if desired.
TRACEY'S NOTES:
- While this pie is not difficult to make, preparing it does span a pretty good length of time given all the layers and freezing time between assembling each one. I have been known to spread the assembly of this pie over two (or even three!) days -- which then makes Frozen Banana Split Pie a really easy dessert to prepare if you're short on time, because you can make it in little 5 to 8 minute snippets.
- The homemade chocolate sauce is super yummy and rich, so I do recommend taking the time to make your own. However, a jar of chocolate sauce would work just fine, too. Same goes for the whipped cream -- if you don't feel like whipping your own, a tub of non-dairy whipped topping would work great.
- Cutting the banana slices into quarters is important. The bananas freeze very firmly. If you place the bananas in the pie in whole slices, it's really difficult to get your fork through the big slices when enjoying the pie.
- We love our Frozen Banana Split Pie really soft -- like almost on the verge of melting all over into a sloppy puddle. So, we also have an alternate softening method for our slices. We cut and plate our slices as soon as the pie is removed from the freezer, and then place them in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. This method creates the perfect texture for us.
