You know I have to admit, when I was typing up the recipe for this tasty Meatball Parmesan Casserole I asked myself, is this dish even really a casserole? It's such a simple dish, I mean, does it really qualify as a true casserole?
So I did a little digging. -- Turns out, by definition of the word, yes, even this simple dish counts as a casserole.
Because this comfort-food Meatball Parmesan Casserole is concocted from only five simple ingredients. Which, to be honest, aren't even stirred together, mind you.
Bake up just 5 simple ingredients to enjoy the cheesy, saucy goodness of this tasty Meatball Parmesan Casserole.
But according to the definition of the word "casserole," a casserole is simply a dish that is cooked slowly in an oven, typically in some form of casserole dish -- this type of dish being what originally gave "casseroles" their name.
So yes, by its virtue of being baked in the oven in a casserole dish, this super-easy, super-simple Meatball Parmesan Casserole does indeed deserve to have bestowed upon it the true title of "casserole."
And taking advantage of prepared meatballs, it truly doesn't take much effort to enjoy its cheesy deliciousness!
Easy Meatball Parmesan Casserole Ingredients:
It takes just 5 simple ingredients to make Meatball Parmesan Casserole. To whip up a pan, you'll need:
- Meatballs - Make your own homemade meatballs, or use prepared frozen meatballs -- either work just fine. Smaller frozen cocktail meatballs can also be used, by just pouring enough into the bottom of a baking dish to make a full single layer.
- Marinara sauce - Jarred marinara sauce makes this recipe super quick and easy. Choose your favorite sauce -- we usually use Ragu or Rao's.
- Mozzarella cheese - Shred your own mozzarella for the meltiest, cheesiest result.
- Parmesan cheese - Shredded or grated Parmesan adds a nice pop of flavor to the cheesy topping.
- Italian seasoning - This blend of Italian herbs nicely seasons the dish.
How to Make Easy Meatball Parmesan Casserole:
It's truly easy to whip up a pan of Meatball Parmesan Casserole using prepared meatballs or homemade meatballs that are already cooked.
Just place a layer of pre-cooked meatballs in a baking dish, arranging them in a single layer completely covering the bottom of the dish. You can also use the smaller frozen cocktail meatballs, if you'd like -- Just pour in enough to fill the bottom of the baking dish in a single layer with perhaps a few stacked up on top.
Smother the layer of meatballs with marinara sauce.
Cover and bake the meatballs for about 30 minutes.
Then sprinkle on some Italian seasoning and a good layer of shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
Pop the Meatball Parmesan back in the oven and bake it for a bit longer until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and just beginning to brown a little in spots.
Then dig on into the cheesy, saucy goodness!
Enjoy the meatballs just as they are, spoon them over noodles or warm garlic bread slices, or serve them as a filling for meatballs subs. We especially love to enjoy our Meatball Parmesan spooned over noodles or garlic bread.
But hey, we're not picky -- we'll take these tasty meatballs any which way we can!
